Open Question: Dial-Up to play Counter-Strike?

Hi, I used to play Counter-Strike on my desktop using 56k modem and Dial Up Internet Connection and it worked fine. I recently bought a new laptop (its very nice) and I tried playing Counter-Strike again and I constantly get a CL_FLUSHENTITYPACKET error and the pings of the servers when I try to join are 1000+ does anyone know how to fix this? I'm running windows VISTA. I've already tried changing the rate/cl_updaterate/cl_cmdrate in the console. THANKS!!! My graphics card is a : Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS So I doubt its due to my graphics card
