Open Question: Firewall-like symptoms for Vista?

All of a suddenly a few of my 3rd party programs, e.g. games connecting to online servers and Messenger, can no longer connect. Yet explorer still works fine. I have no router, and it is not Vista's firewall. It's been fine for the last few months and then today it doesn't work. Anything particular to Vista that could be the cause of this? Annoying! Please give suggestions, thanks.
